The Healthy Eating and Good Nutrition Lifestyle - Featured Image

Healthy eating is a lifestyle choice. You have to make healthy eating a habit if you want to have a vibrant and long life. Correct nutrition can help reduce the risk of many of health-related problems, the most frightening of which are surely heart disease and cancer. Proper nutrition, however, entails eating many different foods, monitoring your consumption of some food and beverage items, and counting calories. Good diets offer balanced nutrition that reduces cholesterol, blood pressure, and helps with weight management.

Nutrient Combination

To function properly, your body must have the correct combination of nutrients:

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the primary source of ammunition in your diet. The body uses carbohydrates to build glucose which can be utilized immediately, or stored for later use. However, too much glucose will result in a surplus of fat that just stays in storage until the body needs it. There are two types of carbohydrates - simple and complex. Sugars are simple carbohydrates. Starches and fibers, on the other hand, are complex carbohydrates.

Proteins

Proteins help the body build and maintain muscles and other tissues. They are also vital in the production of hormones. Like carbohydrates, excess protein is stored as fat.

The two major protein sources are meat and vegetables. Too much meat can cause your cholesterol levels to rise. This is due to the high saturated fat content of meat.

Fat

Strange as it may seem, fat is another nutrient that the body needs. It comes in both saturated and unsaturated forms. Saturated fat is often associated with a variety health problems, such as heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. In contrast, unsaturated fat is healthy (the unrefined variant). If it goes through any kind of refinement process, then it turns into saturated fat.

Vitamins

Vitamins are essential nutrients. Different vitamins have different roles in the body. Most of them help in providing energy to the body so that it can perform various tasks.

Vitamins can also help prevent diseases. For example, vitamins A, C, and E can prevent coronary artery disease by making sure that the artery walls are unobstructed.

Vitamin B1 is needed for digestion and proper nervous system operation, B2 for normal cell growth, and B3 for detoxification. In addition, folic acid aids in the production of red blood cells, vitamin D in the absorption of calcium, and vitamin K blood clot prevention.

Minerals and Trace Elements

Minerals, like chlorine help create the body's digestive juices. Phosphorus helps in developing strong bones. Both are found in the food we consume regularly, but only a small amount is needed due to the trace elements.

Nutrition Guidelines

There are several guidelines for a well balanced nutritional diet. First, try to consume two and one half cups of vegetables and two cups of fruit each day. Be sure to choose a good variety. A good starting point would be to eat as many colors as possible, as it covers all five vegetable subgroups.

You should also eat at least three ounces of whole grain products each day. Add to that, consume at least forty-eight ounces of low fat milk.

Your total fat intake should only be between ten and thirty percent of your calories. A majority of those fats should be unsaturated, as saturated fats can be harmful to your health. Meat, poultry, dry beans, and milk should all be lean, low-fat, or fat-free. Finally, trans-fatty acids should be avoided when possible.

Fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains should be a regular part of your diet, as should potassium rich foods. Alcoholic beverages should only be consumed in moderation.

Healthy Eating Guidelines

Healthy eating is a way of balancing the food you eat to keep your body in great health. By eating healthy foods, you'll have energy all day, get the vitamins and minerals you need, stay strong for activities you enjoy, and maintain a healthy weight.

Don't Skip Meals

Eating three meals with snacks in between is the ideal way to maintain a healthy weight. When you skip meals and get hungry, you're more than likely to choose unhealthy meals.

Learn How to Prepare Food

Instead of deep frying, try grilling, stir frying, microwaving, baking, and boiling. Fresh or dried herbs and spices are also great for adding flavor to your food.

Stay Away from Sugary Foods

Drinks that contain sugar are a major source of empty energy. What this means is that the drinks contain a lot of energy that your body may not need, and they also do not include vitamins and minerals. One sugary drink per day is the absolute limit.

Changing how you eat is always a great step towards healthy eating. The healthier you eat, the better you'll feel. No matter how old you may be, healthy eating is something that you should strive for. Once you give it a chance, you'll see how much it can change your life for the
better.
